Sexton (Full Time)

The sextons support the mission of the church by ensuring cleanliness, maintenance, safety, orderliness, and security of the church properties. The sextons are directly responsible to the Facilities Manager and administrator. This is a non-exempt position scheduled for 40 hours weekly.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Cleanliness
    • Maintain the cleanliness of all bathrooms and public spaces. Bathrooms should be checked daily, including the stocking of needed supplies.
    • Arrange cleaning in such a way that facilities are prepared for scheduled activities
    • Maintain an orderly appearance throughout the church buildings and grounds (all staff are responsible for the orderliness of their own offices, desks, and shelves)
    • Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and special seasonal cleaning projects
    • Remove trash from the buildings
  • Maintenance
    • Prepare class and meeting rooms for all scheduled events, including Sunday services, weddings, funerals, special services (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and Good Friday), conferences, mid-week meetings and events, and seminars
    • Prepare all preschool spaces, including bathrooms, for daily use
    • Keep all storage and supply areas clean, orderly, and well-stocked
    • Ability to perform basic electrical, plumbing and carpentry work
  • Safety
    • Eliminate sharp objects, loose carpets, objects likely to fall, or any situation which may be judged a safety hazard
    • Remove snow, ice, and litter from steps and sidewalks.
  • Security
    • Oversee building security and all church equipment to ensure that property is not misused or lost
    • Check the church calendar and provide access to groups recorded on the calendar
    • Check buildings at the end of daily activities to ensure the building is vacated, secure, and ready for the next events
  • Other Duties
    • Attend weekly staff meetings and sexton staff meetings

Qualifications:

  • Perform well in all four main sexton responsibility categories (housekeeping, security, event preparation, and light maintenance)
  • Knowledge of Tenth’s HVAC systems, alarm system, and electronic/technical equipment
  • Ability to perform basic electrical, plumbing and carpentry work
  • Willingness to work on weekends and holidays as necessary
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities with attention to detail and deadlines

Educational Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:

1-3 years of basic maintenance
